Benfica took all three points from Portimão, in a match where the performance wasn’t the greatest, but the result was what we needed.
Up against a side that hasn’t won a match since December; nonetheless, we knew it wouldn’t be easy.
✅ QUANTITY OVER QUALITY
At the moment, I think we all realize, or at least should, that we aren’t going to have eye-catching performances. If you’re someone who thinks that’s going to happen this season, at least consistently, you may need to review your expectations.
With the highs and lows this season coupled with the unbalanced squad, at this point, as long as we win, the performance is the least of my worries.
In Portimão, I think we saw that.
The first half wasn’t necessarily one to write home about. Benfica had the majority of the possession, moved it side-to-side, but couldn’t create much. We’ve seen that before!
Out of nothing, Portimonense scored on their only chance.
Taarabt’s risky pass, then Otamendi’s poor approach to the play. Unlike what happened last week against Vitória SC, Odysseas wasn’t able to bail us out this time around.
After the intermission for the light show, Benfica started to grow into the game, eventually finding the back of the net.
I thought the second was better, but again, not a performance that left you applauding and on the edge of your seat.
Both sides combined for three goals and four shots on target. I think that in itself tells you all you need to know.
Either way, three points, which puts some pressure on Sporting, who are tied at the moment of writing this.
Better performances will come, but don’t expect them too often this season.
❌ THE LIGHT SHOW
It’s difficult to understand how fans can still get into the stadium with flares given all the security measures at sports events. Fans are asked to toss a bottle of water in the trash when entering, but flares and other nonsense get in.
Today, we witnessed just one more episode of the embarrassment that is Liga Portugal. We want to try and sell our product, yet everything we are putting in the shopping window is far from pleasant to look at.
Well over five minutes of just flare after flare dropping onto the field. I believe the commentators mentioned something like 20+.
These are fans who are putting all of those around them at risk, but they are also putting the club at risk.
Fines and the potential of having to play matches with no fans. I don’t want to disrespect anyone, but for me, those are not fans who have the club’s best interest in mind.
We witnessed similar scenes midweek in the clássico. When will the league, the federation, and even the authorities put their foot down?
From stricter actions off the back of these situations to a better and more thorough check when entering the stadium, something needs to be done quickly.
What would you consider your positive, and let’s be honest moment of this match? Be sure to share them in the comments.
